Bird watching
The area around Callander is ideal for bird watching, with a landscape varying from
farmland, through rough pasture and bog to forests, lochs and upland moors. Birds
of prey are a common sight and, in particular, Red Kites are regularly fed at Argaty
Farm, an RSPB reserve, near Doune.
For more information on the key sites to see Birds of Prey, click on www.birdofpreytrail.com or www.argatyredkites.co.uk
Fishing
The lochs and rivers of the Trossachs provide opportunities to fish for both game
fish such as salmon, sea and brown trout and, in some locations, coarse fish such
as pike and perch. In Callander, permits for the Rivers Teith and Leny and Lochs
Venachar, Achray, Chon and Drunkie, amongst others, are available from James Bayne,
on the main street, whilst boat fishing on Loch Venachar is available at Venachar
Lochside, Carsaig.
For more details see www.trossachs-leisure.co.uk and www.lochlomond-trossachs.org for a copy of a leaflet detailing all fishing opportunities.
Canoeing and Kayaking
The number of lochs and rivers in the trossachs area makes Callander a great base
for a kayaking or open canoeing trip. Apart from the attractions of Lochs such as
Katrine, Acray and Venachar, a longer trip can be made by connecting Loch Voil to
Loch Lubnaig via the River Balvag, giving the potential of a two day trip. Rough
water enthusiasts can enjoy the delights of the River Teith and, further afield,
the rapids at Killin.

Cycling
There are innumerable opportunities for both on and off road cycling within both
the Callander area and the wider Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park (see www.lochlomond-trossachs.org).
For mountain bike enthusiasts the Qeen Elizabeth Forest Park offers a wide variety of way marked off road cycling routes, many of which are suitable for families, whilst a 15 mile round trip of Glens Finglas and Meann will provide a work-out for the fittest .
